The patent for Viagra in the United States was not renewed.
Pfizer said it planned to launch the drug in the United States in late 2019.
"It's not yet known if it will be marketed in the United States, but the drug has already received FDA approval in the European Union and is already available as a generic," Dr. Douglas Goss, Pfizer's chief executive, said in a statement.
"We have a number of other options for people who have heart problems, but we are making very limited progress with Viagra Connect because we believe it's the only effective, FDA-approved option," he said.
A spokesman for Pfizer said: "The company is committed to making an early-release version of Viagra Connect available to the American population and continues to work with partners worldwide to support our global efforts to expand access to this important medication."
The drug was developed and manufactured by AstraZeneca under the name Procter & Gamble.The patent for the drug in the United States was not renewed.
The drug has been sold in the United States for about $9.75 a pill. A spokesman for AstraZeneca said: "The product is marketed in approximately 40 countries and is sold over the counter and distributed by various pharmaceutical companies in many different countries, including the United States and European Union."
